At Grow Landscape Yard we are proud to stock the GEOHEX™ Erosion Control System — a versatile, high-performance product designed to stabilise substrates, reduce erosion and deliver long-term performance across a wide range of applications.

What is GEOHEX™?

GEOHEX™ is an Australian-made plastic turf and substrate stabiliser, manufactured from 100% recycled post-consumer polypropylene. Its structure consists of interlocking hexagonal cells (honey-comb style) that allow infill (gravel, sand, turf or other aggregate) and create a stiffened base layer which mitigates soil movement, erosion, shearing and subsidence.

Key specs:

  • Panel size: 1000 mm × 500 mm × 42 mm (two panels = 1 m²)
  • Weight per panel ~2.3 kg
  • Maximum load bearing capacity when filled: ~1,200 tonnes per square metre.
  • Water permeability ~99.7% (once installed) which means water drains through rather than building up.
  • Made from 100% recycled and recyclable material; inert, non-toxic to humans, animals and plants.
  • Can be installed quickly, in many weather conditions, and is a cost-effective substitute for concrete/asphalt in some applications.

Why choose GEOHEX™?

Stability and load-bearing
Because the GEOHEX grid forms a connected cell structure, loading (vehicles, animals, foot traffic) is distributed across the infill and the underlying substrate is stabilised. This makes it ideal in areas where soils may be weak, erosion is an issue, or you want a durable surface without full concrete.

Erosion control & water management
The permeable design allows water to infiltrate rather than run off, reducing erosion, puddling and sediment transport. GEOHEX™ helps to retain a stable surface on slopes and prevents soil loss.

Environmental credentials
Being made from 100% recycled plastic, and fully recyclable again, GEOHEX™ is a greener choice compared to concrete or bitumen pavings.

Versatility & aesthetics
You can infill with decorative gravel, turf, sand, or crushed stone, and the grid becomes nearly invisible when finished – so it blends into landscaped or equine settings. For example, you can use gravel driveways that look natural but perform like a engineered surface.

Ease of installation
Lightweight panels mean easier handling, quicker installation, and less disruption. You can install in many weather conditions and on a variety of substrates (subject to correct preparation).

Long-term durability & low maintenance
Because the structure prevents rutting, subsidence and erosion, maintenance costs are lower compared to conventional surfaces. Plus the materials are inert, so resistant to chemicals, oils and water.

Applications for GEOHEX™

1. Residential & Driveways
For homeowners, key challenges include: driveways on sloping blocks, erosion from water run-off, soft ground under vehicles, and the desire for a more natural look than asphalt or plain concrete.

GEOHEX™ is ideal for:

  • Gravel or crushed stone driveways where you want drainage and a clean finish
  • Turf or grass-reinforced driveways where vehicles park on lawn without causing rutting
  • Slopes: while site preparation is still important, GEOHEX™ can be used to stabilise steeper surfaces (note that on steep slopes additional anchoring/pinning may be required).
  • Managing water run-off: Because of the permeable nature, less water flows off and less erosion of the driveway edges occurs.

Tip for homeowners: When selecting infill, choose a well-compacted base and appropriate aggregate (for example crusher dust or crushed rock), ensure proper fall and drainage, and consider edging to contain the infill and GEOHEX grid.

2. Equine Arenas & Rural / Livestock Areas
In rural settings and equine / livestock yards, surfaces routinely bear heavy loads (vehicles, machinery, animals) and face erosion from water, hooves, troughs and gates. GEOHEX™ offers an excellent solution:

  • Use around cattle troughs, feedlots, stables, gateways and stock-yard lanes.
  • In equine arenas: GEOHEX™ can form a base layer under arena footing or around high traffic zones (e.g., mounting blocks, entrances) to reduce subsidence and keep dust under control.
  • Rural driveways and farm tracks: compared to conventional dirt/gravel, GEOHEX™ improves durability, lowers maintenance, and reduces the risk of ruts and wash-outs.

Tip for rural clients: Prepare the sub-grade carefully (remove soft spots, compact well), select infill suited to the livestock or vehicle traffic, and ensure drainage is well addressed (especially under troughs or along runoff paths).

3. Landscaping, Slopes & Retention Zones
For landscape designers, the challenge is often erosion on slopes, garden paths, turf reinforcement under parking or display zones, and integrating surfaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. GEOHEX™ can help by:

  • Reinforcing turf or gravel surfaces subject to foot or light vehicle traffic (e.g., lawn parking zones, events lawn areas)
  • Stabilising slopes and retaining zones where erosion from rain/run-off is a concern: the grid helps lock the surface and infill in place, reducing soil loss and improving safety.

  • Allowing for more sustainable design by using permeable surfaces, reducing hard-paving footprint and improving infiltration.

Tip for landscapers: Combine GEOHEX™ installation with proper drainage (swales, subdrains), vegetation-friendly infill (sand/turf) and integrate with garden edging and retaining where needed. The result is a stronger, longer-lasting landscaped surface.

Installation & Practical Considerations

While GEOHEX™ is versatile, like any specialised product it delivers best results when properly installed. Some key pointers:

  • Ground preparation: Remove vegetation/organic matter, ensure the sub-grade is compacted and stable. Weak sub-grades will reduce performance.
  • Base layer: Often a thin layer of crushed rock or road-base is placed under the grid for a smooth, level surface.
  • Infilling: Use an aggregate appropriate for the application (crusher dust, gravel, sand, soil + turf). Make sure infill is well compacted so that GEOHEX™ is locked in place.
  • On slopes: Additional anchoring/pinning may be required if the incline is significant. For residential driveways GEOHEX™ recommends pegging down on slopes >10%.
  • Edge restraints: Install edging or kerbs where appropriate to contain the infill and prevent migration.
  • Drainage: Although GEOHEX™ is permeable, it doesn’t replace the need for drainage design – make sure water flow is managed so it doesn’t undermine the base.
  • A geofabric membrane can be laid underneath the GEOHEX™ tiles to ensure that the system doesn’t sink into sand or soil over time.
  • Infill finish: For a natural appearance, choose an infill that matches the surrounding palette (e.g., gravel, turf, stone). The grid becomes invisible once installed.
